Solidarity in Poland From the Solidarno¶æ to Freedom The 25th Anniversary of Solidarity ![]() 2007-11-21 09:58:12 skomentuj (0) 1989 - Breakthrough In 1989, on February 6th, roundtable meeting took place. On one side sit the representatives of political regime, on the other the fighting leaders of Solidarity. After 2 months of tough negotiations the agreement was signed. The elections took place on June 4th. The agreement of the roundtable allowed the free elections of only 35% of MPs and guaranteed the full free elections to the Senate. Solidarity won all possible seats to the Parliament and 99 out of 100 seats to the Senate. On August 24th, the Prime Minister of new government became appointed by Lech Walesa – Tadeusz Mazowiecki. After 3 weeks, the first non-communist government for over 45 years was established in Poland. The fist visit was made not to Moscow but to the Vatican. ![]() 2007-11-21 07:43:50 skomentuj (0) 1986, 1987 and 1988 In 1986, Radio Solidarity started to exist. Walesa set up, since the martial law was implemented, openly operation the management of the union. Solidarity became a member of International Confederation of Free Labor Unions. In 1987, once again John Paul the 2nd was back to his country. During this time, there were great Solidarity manifestations. In 1988, Time magazine announces the leader of Soviet Union as a man of the year. In Poland, the economic crisis deepens. When Gorbaczow came to the Warsaw, he informed the authorities that they cannot count on the help of the Moscow. In May and August, Poland is again taken over by strikes. The main postulate was the re-legalization of Solidarity. At this time Lech Walesa said: “Solidarity is alive, because you gave the live for it!”. In 1985, Michai³ Gorbaczow became a leader of Soviet Union. He announced a policy of careful reforms. In spite of the opposition of authorities, Pope and Lech Walesa met together. The protests made by journalists and another activist were held. In October 5th, Lech Walesa received the Nobel Peace Prize. Unfortunately, Lech Walesa was not allowed by the communist authorities to go to the Oslo and get the reward personally, that is why his wife did it. ![]() Pope and Lech Walesa 2007-11-21 03:30:43 skomentuj (0) 1982 Lech Walesa became the man of the year according to Time magazine, but he was also imprisoned. By refusing the negotiations with authorities Walesa retains the unity of Solidarity. On the day of national celebration on May 3rd special military units attacked people coming out of churches. However, Solidarity operating underground is supported by the western societies such as Canada, US, Australia. Almost the whole nation debates about their future. In April, first issue of Solidarity weekly was published. It was first in almost 30 years in all of the communist block fully independent, officially published magazine. However, the economic crisis deepens, the Solidarity organizes a hunger strike. The country is taken over by protest. However, December 13th military council introduced a state of martial law on the territory of Poland. Thousands of Solidarity activists, intellectuals, professors, journalists and students were in prison. Telephones were disconnected. Traveling was limited and all independent associations and organizations were illegalized. Newspapers were closed. In July and August, many strikes took place. The demands of truth, respect of human dignity and freedom were more important than bread. Even that, everyone was wondering: either the authorities have sent the army against the rebellions’ nations once again or sit down to the negotiations. Then, another miracle took place. Gdansk shipyard worker – Lech Walesa announced the government’s agreement which legalized the Solidarity – Independent Self-governing Trade Union. Above 10 million people joined in, what was the half of the employed. At this time, Czeslaw Milosz received the Nobel Prize in Literature. His books were publish by underground publishing house – Novel. It is fragment of the poem of Czeslaw Milosz, which was put on the monument in Gdansk: “You who hurt a simple man, and love in his heart, having a bunch of fools around you, to compose good and evil, do not feel safe; a poet remembers, you can kill him, a new one is born, so actions and discussions be on record”. ![]() 2007-11-21 02:34:00 skomentuj (0) 1979 In June, Polish Pope did his first pilgrimage to mother country. During this period Pope said something what had been written into Polish culture till today. He said: "Let your spirit come, and restore the face of the land, this land". It made the whole society feel more comfortable and gave them a new hope, hope for a freedom.
